Rasa, Rakta, Mansa, Meda, Asthi, Majja and Shukra are the seven dhatus or the body tissues as specified in Ayurveda, the Science of Life. While every tissue works to formulate and nourish the next forming tissue, there are some defined functions that each one undertakes.
- Rasa (Juice / Plasma) – Contentment, nourishment and aids in formation of the blood tissue.
- Rakta (Blood) – Takes care of life itself, imparts natural glow to the complexion and as well provides sustenance to the ensuing muscle tissue.
- Mansa (Muscle) – This tissue mainly provides lepana or coating / layering of the bones, and also sustains the body by nourishing the latter tissue i.e. the fat tissue.
- Meda (Fat) – The main attribute of this tissue is that it intensifies unctuousness in the entire body and more specifically in the eyes, increases greasiness, durability and strengthening of the body while nourishing the following bone tissue.
- Asthi (Bone) – The bone tissue provides structure and upright actuality to the body, and also reinforces nutrition of the Majja dhatu or the bone-marrow.
- Majja (Bone-Marrow) – This particular tissue once formed, provides endurance, unctuousness, completes the entire configuration of the bones and as well development and nurturing of the following semen tissue of the body.
- Shukra (Semen) – The seventh tissue fortifies happiness and gratification, builds up the stamina and essentially develops and supports the Garbha or state of pregnancy which lays foundation of the foetus.
